Money is the part of a language you use the most and learn the least, because pointing works. It works right up until somebody keeps your change, and then it does not.

Thai numbers are completely regular, which makes this easier than it looks. Eleven is "ten-one". Twenty-three is "two-ten-three". Learn ten words and one small trick and you can say any price in the country.

Start here: เท่าไหร่ (thâo-rài), "how much?" And เงินทอน (ngoen-thawn), "my change." Those two do most of the work.

Questions people ask

How do you say "how much" in Thai?

เท่าไหร่ (thâo-rài). For a price in baht: กี่บาท (gìi bàat).

How do you count to ten in Thai?

nùeng, sǎawng, sǎam, sìi, hâa, hòk, jèt, bpàaet, gâao, sìp: หนึ่ง สอง สาม สี่ ห้า หก เจ็ด แปด เก้า สิบ.

Why is 20 not "song-sip"?

ยี่สิบ (yîi-sìp) is the one irregular number in Thai. Everything else follows the pattern.

How do you ask for your change in Thai?

เงินทอน (ngoen-thawn). Add ครับ or ค่ะ and it is polite rather than pointed.

Can you pay by card in Thailand?

In cities and chains, usually. At markets, street food and small shops, cash. Carry both and ask: บัตรเครดิตได้ไหม (bàt kre-dìt dâai mǎi).
